AB OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to make direct comparison of
the Mother-to-child HIV transmission rate (TR) in industrialized and in
developing countries. METHODS: A direct method of calculation of the
Gent Classification is used involving a case-by-case evaluation of all
the children born to HIV-1 seropositive mothers. RESULTS: TABULAR DATA,
SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS: Following the Gent classification and
recommendations, in high prevalence countries and low prevalence
countries the rates are homogenous. Considering the lower and Median
estimates, the TR double for developing countries compare to
industrialized ones.
